5 Signs You Are on the Verge of Business Burnout

05/08/2024

Ah, the life of a solopreneur: where the only “team-building” exercise involves talking to your reflection in the mirror and the closest thing to a “staff meeting” is your cat walking across your keyboard.

Yes, burnout is the uninvited party crasher that turns your entrepreneurial dream into a not-so-dreamy reality.

While those in partnerships might bicker over who makes the coffee, they at least have someone to share the load. As a solopreneur, it’s just you, carrying the weight of your empire on your solo shoulders, often leading to marathon 14+ hour workdays and a vague memory of what your family looks like.

But is turning yourself into a workaholic hermit really the key to success? Spoiler alert: No, unless your definition of success includes talking to houseplants for companionship. Whether you’re single or have a family, neglecting self-care and relaxation is like trying to run a marathon with your shoelaces tied together—it’s not going to end well.

So, how do you know if you’re on the express train to Burnoutville? Here are the signs:

Insomnia:

When your brain’s idea of a bedtime story is running through work tasks, good luck catching those Z’s. This leads to being overtired, under-energized, and making business decisions that are about as wise as a chocolate teapot.

Procrastination:

Remember when your to-do list felt like a treasure map? Now it feels like a chore list you’d rather bury under a rock. Procrastination isn’t just about being lazy; it’s your brain’s way of saying, “I’d rather watch paint dry.”

Fatigue:

Ever heard of “burning the candle at both ends”? Well, doing that turns you into the human equivalent of a melted puddle of wax—useless to everyone, especially yourself.

Changes in Appetite:

Stress eating or stress not-eating—either way, your body is not on board. Remember, dining al desko is not a lifestyle.

Anxiety:

There’s the good kind of butterflies, like before a first date, and then there’s the kind that feels like you’ve got a colony of bats in your stomach. Not the same.

So, what happens if you, the solopreneur superhero, are out of commission? It’s not great. Your business could take a nosedive faster than you can say, “I should have taken a break.” But don't stress! The cure involves taking a chill pill (metaphorically speaking).

Follow these 5 Tips for Easy Self-care

  • Take some quiet time for yourself.
  • Go outside and marvel at the fact that there’s a world beyond your office.
  • Unplug for a weekend and actually live in those moments you’re so busy capturing for Instagram.
  • Rekindle old friendships.
  • Pick up a hobby that doesn’t involve checking your email.

The possibilities are endless.
